Engagement Photo Tips
Planning a wedding is a stressful task already in itself- the work seems endless. Don't let the stress from it all take away your bride-to-be "glow". Now, you have your engagement photography shoot coming up shortly- it may have completely slipped your mind and you know your better half is definitely not ready. Remember, an engagement is a chance to get to know and communicate with your photographer before the wedding. It is a chance for you and your photographer to think outside of the box while experimenting with fun ideas. It's NOT a serious business meeting, so relax!
Here are some tips you can follow before your engagement shoot.
Tip #1: Personalize It!
The engagement photos are a story about YOU! So let that be told. You may want to consider bringing any significant items (i.e. a special book, a specific sports team banner, school mascot stuff animal, etc.) from your relationship to use as props in the shoot. It definitely adds a personal touch and customizes the shoot to represent who you two are. You may also want to consider creating a theme or storyline for the shoot. Be creative! Location, location, location. Locations make all the difference. Pick a location that not only fits your personality but the theme you've selected!
Tip #2: Location and Scheduling
Before the shoot, plan your schedule with your photographer accordingly. Allot enough time to get from one location to the next. Be sure to calculate in possible traffic delays and give yourself enough leeway for possible changes. The last thing you or the photographer would want to worry about is time.
Visit each location at least once so you know exactly how to get there on the day of. Check with the venue to make sure professional photography is allowed, their fees (if applicable), and any additional necessary licenses to shoot on the premise. We don't want you to pick your ideal location and find out you're not allowed to photograph there. If the time of day is a consideration for specific shots or crowded areas, check your schedule of the day for conflicts.
Tip #3: Attitude
Half the battle of feeling your best is in your mind! Don't stress. Relax and be yourself and the couple that you are. This will yield the best results. Remember, this engagement shoot is to capture the couple that you two are along with your love and personality. Have fun!
Tip #4: Diet
Not only do you want to look your best on the day of your engagement photography, you want to feel your best! Here is a simple diet tip: Do not eat too salty a couple days before or drink too much the night before. Both may cause bloating. And here is another given: get plenty of sleep.
Tip #5: Get Inspired!
Check out magazines for ideas on outfits and style. Perhaps you want to stay within your comfort zone or you may want to experiment with a more interesting style appropriate to your theme (if you have one). GQ magazine and VOGUE are great resources for up-to-date lifedstyle fashion. For wedding gowns and formal attire, check out Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine. That should get you started with plenty of ideas.
Tip #6: Skincare
Skincare is very important. Be sure to apply your basic daycare products before your makeup. If you are getting make-up services with us, please do not apply any make-up in advance. For the groom, use facewash and apply basic moisturizer.
A mask is a quick fix for dehydrated skin. Apply a mask 2 days before. Do not leave the mask on for more than 20 minutes as it will suffocate the skin and lead to possible infections or pimples. The purpose of the mask is to hydrate your skin. Make-up will stay on longer and look more natural. Stay with the same brand of mask that you're used to, that avoid possible allergic reactions from other brands.
If you decide to get a facial, be sure it's done 2 weeks prior to your shoot so your skin is fully recovered and gorgeous for the shoot! Redness often times occurs immediately after a facial and we want to avoid applying make-up on raw skin.
Tip #7: Manicure and Pedicure
Don't forget the nails! If you do not have time to get a manicure, relax! Just remove any old nail polish and file them. A clean, simple look is better than peeling old discolored nail polish.
Tip #8: Haircare
Wash and blow-dry your hair the day before and not the morning of your shoot. This ensures that your hair is completely dry, yet not oily, for straightening or curling. Clean hair is a courtesy to your hairstylist!
For the groom, it is best to get a haircut 1-2 weeks before the shoot.
Tip #9: Boudoir
Boudoir is a very sexy and intimate type of photography. Now, that you have pampered yourself to look beautiful, consider boudoir. If not a gift to your fiance, make it a gift to yourself! A great way to remember how gorgeous you are!
Tip #10: Booking Your Photographer
Last but not least, book your engagement photographer at least 3-6 months in advance to ensure that you get the photos in time to share with your family and friends on your wedding day!
If you are photographing with us...
Bring a strapless bar or Nu bra that is appropriate for your dress. The bride will also need a pair of heels. The groom should bring a pair of black socks and dress shoes. Casual clothes are welcomed! Personally, I think they make for the best photos!
Now that you know you have the tools for a smooth-sailing photo shoot. I know it may sound like there's now MORE things you have to think about but these are all preparations you do before the shoot. So just give yourself plenty of time. You will find that on the day of your shoot, it is just a break to getaway from the house or work for the two of you to enjoy each other's company :) Essentially, that is exactly what an engagement shoot is about.!
